Mike O'Neill of Arsenal Soccer Schools Guest Coaches at Carey for Hattiesburg Youth Soccer
Vastly experienced soccer coach Mike O'Neill of Belfast, Northern Ireland, who works for English Premier League Arsenal took time to guest coach at the Hattiesburg Youth Soccer Association camps on the campus of William Carey University. O'Neill helps run the Arsenal Soccer Schools in Northern Ireland recommending young players to the soccer giants known worldwide as the Gunners. O'Neill is also a friend of Steve Morrow the head coach of FC Dallas of Major League Soccer fame. Morrow is also from Belfast and played for Arsenal and also coached with O'Neill in Northern Ireland. "It's a real pleasure to be in the States and to see the development of the game here. My pal Nigel Boulton who is the head men's coach at William Carey University asked me to lend a hand and I'm happy to do so. Hattiesburg has a great youth soccer organization, I met the President Mark Wilson and other members of the board last week and they are all keen to improve soccer in the area" said O'Neill who will lead a second camp for ages 8 and older beginning Monday 23rd July. O'Neill has also supplied William Carey with three top line recruits for 2007. Belfast born players Niall Devine, Joseph McNiell and Brendan Connolly have all signed to play for the Crusaders. Crusader head coach Nigel Boulton explained, "Mike knows a good player when he sees one. All of his recommendations have been outstanding. He will meet the players when they arrive for pre-season and also help us during the pre-season training period before flying home to Belfast in August. Mississippi High School Activities Association -
The story to date
This is the information that we have as it has come to us. We hope this helps gives some focus to all of the discsussion
October 2005 - Parents had to bring the MHSAA before the State legislature because the MHSAA would not allow teams to attend Showcase Tournaments during Thanksgiving and Christmas Breaks. MHSAA agrees to allow teams to attend two showcase Tournaments during the "High School Season".
October 4, 2006 - Three south district clubs' high schools receive calls to their principals regarding player eligibility. HYSA has several players playing on the Oak Grove team, they are told that they could be declared ineligible. Pearl High School warns U16G rec team not to form or be ineligible.
Lamar County School attorney states that the High School Season starts at the beginning of school. Read the (1) Hattiesburg American Article, and the (2) follow-up article.
Division I Vice President cancels MSA League games so as to insure that MSA players are not deemed ineligible according to the "finding" of the Lamar County School board attorney.
HYSA President/Coach mark Wilson and parent judge/attorney Honorable Jeff Stewart writes proctor requesting clarification. Proctor agrees to meet with him. (3) Read the letter, and read the (4) response from MHSAA.
October 9, 2006 - USYS Region III Premier League Director- (Mississippi) cancels Premier League Games so as to insure that MSA players are not deemed ineligible according to the "finding" of the Lamar County School board attorney.
Mark Wilson and Jeff Stewart begin phone call and letter writing campaign to state legislators. Download and (5) paste this letter in any e-mail to your State Senator. Write your own note if you'd prefer.
Sen. J. Ed Morgan at emorgan@mail.senate.state.ms.us
Sen. Mike Chaney at mchaney@mail.senate.state.ms.us
Sen. Alan Nunnelee at anunnelee@mail.senate.state.ms.us
October 11, 2006 - Mark Wilson, Jeff Stewart and Honarable Judge Deborah Gambrell-Chambers meet via teleconference
After the teleconference the essence of the meeting seemed to indicate that a waiver from Dr. Enis Proctor will allow Division 1 Soccer to continue until the start of High School Soccer Play.
He further states that he understands that soccer operates differently from other sports. He will continue to allow teams to attend two showcase tournaments during the High School Season.
The MHSAA will hold a meeting on November 2nd to modify the current rule to remove the actual number of players allowed/disallowed so that the teams coach may determine the appropriate number of club players to start for his soccer squad. (6) Read the actual response to the teleconference meeting with Dr. Proctor.
This apparently clears the way for continued Premier League Play and attendance at the pre-high school season tournaments, as well as rescheduling of Mississippi Soccer League Games. Stand by for more information as it becomes available.
To view photos go to;
http://www.shutterfly.com/pro/MCarpenter/HYSA
Once again the MHSAA has tried to interpose themselves into Soccer in Mississippi at a time that the high school season is not in play. They have threatened the players again and we have cancelled the final select league games of the fall season in order to keep the children from being punished.
This does not affect our Recreational league or games. These will still be played on Saturdays.
It appears that we will have to bring the MHSAA back before the Mississippi State Legislature to get Legislative oversight of this organization who currently reports to no one. We will provide more information in the future as we get our congressmen and representatives to call the MHSAA back before them.
Letters or e-mails should be sent to Senator J. Ed Morgan @ emorgan@mail.senate.state.ms.us, Senator Mike Chaney @ mchaney@mail.senate.state.ms.us, and Senator Alan Nunnelee @
anunnelee@mail.senate.state.ms.us, asking him to bring MHSAA back before the Mississippi State Legislature to get legislative oversight on MHSAA and remove or re-write this ambiguous rule to protect our children's rights once and for all.
Make $50 or more dollars a Saturday refereeing games. For more information contact William Cook HYSA Assignor.
